Manifold is a mathematical concept generalizing the notion of curve and surface. One of the most fundamental questions in manifold theory is how many smooth structures a given topological manifold admits. Unlike other dimensions, dimension 4 is the only dimension that the answer to the question could be “infinite”.
In this talk, we introduce various surgery techniques in 4-manifolds useful in answering the question.
