The finite-dimensional irreducible representations of a quantum affine algebra are parametrized by tuples of certain polynomials. This is analogous to Cartan's highest weight classification of the finite–dimensional irreducible representations of a complex simple Lie algebra. An important concept in the subject is the Drinfeld realization of quantum affine algebras, which can be regarded as the quantum version of the loop realization of affine Lie algebras. I will review the classification of the finite-dimensional representations of affine Lie algebras first and then the corresponding result for quantum affine algebras
