The purpose of this lecture is to give an introduction to the notion of a black hole spacetime in general relativity and to discuss important conjectures regarding these fascinating objects, called the cosmic censorship conjectures. In order to reduce technicalities and quickly get to the heart of the matter, I will focus on spherically symmetric models in general relativity. Part 1 of this lecture will be of introductory nature; Part 2 will be a research presentation, in which I will discuss my recent work with J. Luk (Stanford U.) on the strong cosmic censorship conjecture for the Einstein-Maxwell-Scalar Field model in spherical symmetry.
