조선시대 영의정을 지낸 최석정(1646-1715)은 그의 저서 구수략에 여러 크기의 직교라틴방진을 남겼는데 이는 combinatorial mathematics의 효시로 알려진 Leonhard Euler(1707?1783) 의 직교라틴방진보다도 적어도 61년이 앞서는 기록이다.
놀랍게도 최석정이나 Euler나 모두 magic square를 만드는 방법으로 이러한 직교라틴방진을 이용하였다. 그러나 안타깝게도 최석정은 자신이 만든 직교라틴방진에 대한 구체적인 설명이나 관련된 분석을 추가하지 않았다.
본 강연에서는 최석정의 직교라틴방진에 관한 기록과 이를 CRC Handbook of Combinatorial Designs에 공식적 기록으로 올린 내용에 관해 간략히 소개한다. 추가로, magic square를 구성할 수 있는 직교라틴방진의 충분조건에 대해 살펴본다.
