Abstract: This talk is based on joint work with Kyle Austin.  In the study of C*-algebras, focusing on those arising via a groupoid construction can provide access to additional structural information while still allowing for a wealth of examples. My goal in this talk is to describe a method of approximating the groupoid structure, enabling us for example to extend results from second countable groupoids to sigma-compact groupoids. To that end, I will discuss inverse systems of groupoids and their dual directed systems of groupoid C*-algebras.  I will conclude with some applications of this work to C*-algebra theory.

Á¦¸ñ: Exotic C*-algebras of geometric groups

Abstract: When G is a non-amenable locally compact group, the full group C*-algebra C^*(G) and the reduced group C*-algebra C^*_r(G) differ. An exotic group C*-algebra of such a group is a C*-algebra that ``lies between'' C^*(G) and C^*_r(G). We will discuss a new construction of potentially exotic group C*-algebras arising the enveloping C*-algebras of PF^*_p(G) (1<= p <= \infty) -- a newly introduced class of Banach *-algebras associated with G. As a byproduct of our techniques, we give a near solution to a conjecture of Cowling.

This is based on joint work with E. Samei.

Abstract:

The quantum Heisenberg manifolds (QHMs) are noncommutative manifolds constructed by M. Rieffel as strict deformation quantizations of Heisenberg manifolds. The QHMs give another important family of noncommutative manifolds along with noncommutative two-tori. In this talk, we first review noncommutative Yang-Mills theory on the QHMs based on  the framework given by Connes and Rieffel, and then we discuss recent results of Yang-Mills connections with constant curvature on the QHMs. This is a joint work with Franz Luef and Judith Packer.operator-valued strong L^2-functions.

Halmos two projections theorem for Hilbert space operators is one of the fundamental results in operator theory. In this talk we will focus on its generalization to the Hilbert C*-module case, and its application in clarifying the Friedrichs angle between two closed submodules. Based on some new characterizations of the closed submodules and their associated projections, we will introduce a new term of separated idempotents. Á¦¸ñ: Entangled edge states of corank one with positive partial transposes

Abstract:

In the current quantum information and computation theory, the notion of entanglement is considered as one of the most important resources. Nevertheless, distinguishing entanglement from separability is very difficult, and known to be NP hard in general. Among various separability criteria, the PPT criterion is very simple to test but powerful: The partial transpose of a separable state must be positive (semi-definite). Of particular interest are some extremal PPT states, called entangled edge states, because all PPT states are convex sums of separable states and edge states.

I will talk about an explicit construction of a parameterized family of n⊗n PPT states of corank one whose partial transposes have corank 2n-3 for every n¡Ã3. We checked that these states are in fact entangled edge states, for n up to 800. We conjecture that they are entangled edge states for all n¡Ã3. Our states are the first explicit examples of PPT entangled edge states for n¡Ã4.

Based on a joint work with Jinwon Choi and Seung-Hyeok Kye.
