Given a family of complex varieties, the period map can detect variations in complex structures by comparing the Hodge structures of the fibers, where the flatness of the Gauss-Manin connection enables the identification of the de Rham cohomology classes of each fiber. In this talk, we present a categorical analogue of these constructions by studying the Gauss-Manin connection on the periodic cyclic homology of a formal family of categories.
