In this talk, I will give a brief introduction to three closely related topics in smooth ergodic theory and fractal geometry: ergodic optimization, thermodynamic formalism, and multifractal analysis. I will outline their principal themes and conclude with a short survey of several open problems and recent developments in these areas.
