Title: A gentle introduction to (modern) geometric engineering of SCFTs.
Abstract: In this talk I will explain the geometric engineering of 4d and 5d supersymmetric superconformal field theories (SCFTs) in string theory, while assuming next to zero knowledge about QFT or string theory. I will explain how physics considerations lead to interesting geometric phenomena, focusing especially on generalized conifold transitions. I will also discuss some work in progress on the local mirror symmetry description of those geometric transitions.
