Empirical knowledge gathered through observation and experimentation is rationally explained within the framework of abstract theories, gaining unified meaning. Through this process, humanity has achieved profound insights into nature and the cosmos that transcend mere experience and intuition. Mathematics provides a unified and sophisticated foundation for thought across all scientific investigations, playing a pivotal role at its core.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Seoul National University aims to contribute to the advancement of mathematics through excellence in research, while fostering talented individuals capable of contributing to various academic fields and society based on mathematical thinking and creativity. To this end, we conduct a wide range of education and research in core areas of modern mathematics, spanning from traditional pure theories to diverse applied fields. Recent rapid advancements in science and technology, including Artificial Intelligence, foretell significant changes across all scientific disciplines, and the field of mathematics is poised for a new leap forward in step with these trends. Our department aspires to nurture pioneers who approach these changes with an open mind and deep curiosity, embrace them rationally through communication and reflection, and contribute to the progress of both academia and society.
