In this talk, we consider the Cauchy problem for the $\alpha$-surface quasi-geostrophic ($\alpha$-SQG) equations on the plane. We discuss the wellposedness and illposedness of $\alpha$-SQG equations in Sobolev and Holder spaces. Then, we briefly introduce a recent result for $\alpha$-SQG equations on the half-plane.
