We use results and techniques from harmonic analysis to establish a number of new smoothing estimates for the velocity average of the solution of the kinetic transport equation. For example, we shall show that when the velocity domain is either a sphere or a ball, then the desired smoothing estimates are equivalent to certain bounds on the cone multiplier operator. This is joint work with Jonathan Bennett, Susana Gutierrez and Sanghyuk Lee.
